Florida’s digital driver’s license app has vanished from app stores.
It was meant to be an easy contact-free way to prove who you are to police or at stores.As of May, the Florida Smart ID app had just over half a million users. There are nearly 18 million licensed drivers in Florida .It was meant to be an easy and contact-free way to access your state driver’s license, but it did not replace the requirement to have your physical driver’s license when driving a car.
After removing the app, the state released a statement that said, “The Florida Smart ID applications will be updated and improved by a new vendor. At this time, the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles is removing the current Florida Smart ID application from the app store.” The department had reported some issues at the end of June with the app, but it said those problems had been resolved.FLHSMV’s driver license systems are experiencing a degradation of services. FLHSMV is working with its vendor to resolve and stabilize the system as soon as possible. Additional updates will be made as available.
There is no timeline for when a new version will be released.
