Warning! Spoilers for Shrinking season 3, episode 9, ahead!Jeff Daniels' return in Shrinking season 3, episode 9,"Daddy Issues," really messes things up for Jimmy. This actor previously appeared in the Apple TV series playing Jimmy's father, Randy Laird, but his role was of little consequence until now.

We learned that Jimmy has a pretty complicated relationship with his father, to the point where he feels rather uncomfortable about Alice being so attached to him. Still, he put his own feelings aside so that Alice would feel comfortable asking Randy to her graduation. Shrinking season 3, episode 9 follows up on the consequences of Alice's invite, but that's not all. This newest installment also checks back in on Sean , who previously took a risk by interviewing for a sous chef position in a big-time restaurant. The experience put him completely out of his comfort zone, but part of his reluctance was that if he did get the job, he would have to break the news to Jorge , who works with him on the food truck. Finally, the other major player in this episode of Shrinking season 3 is Gaby , whose entire career was shaken after she lost a patient. Back in Shrinking season 3, episode 8, Gaby decided to take an extended break following the tragedy, despite the effort of Paul to get her back on the horse. Gaby gave it her best shot at first. However, when two of her patients decided to see another therapist because of Maya's death, Gaby threw in the towel. Going into Shrinking season 3, episode 9, Paul gives it all he's got to bring her back, and that means playing a little dirty. Gaby Officially Gets Back To Work In Shrinking Season 3, Episode 9 The first scenes of Shrinking season 3, episode 9, reveal that Gaby is at least back on her feet. We see her out on a hike with Jimmy, Liz, and Derek , but when she's asked about work, her whole attitude changes. Gaby maintains that she is still figuring things out, but it's clear that she is afraid. Just as her patients lost confidence in her when Maya died, Gaby lost confidence and trust in herself. Enter—Paul. Paul is slowly approaching retirement, and, in episode 9, he reminds Gaby that he is entering his final week at the office. This will be her last chance to work with him ever again. It's a bit of a dirty play, but the guilt works on Gaby just as Paul hoped. She agrees to come back, and we immediately see her spark return as she sits down with her first patient. Paul sees it too, of course, and it brings back a conversation the pair had previously in Shrinking season 3. When Paul leaves, he wants Gaby to take over his practice. She previously declined the offer, since her goal was to dive into the nitty-gritty of trauma work. However, now that Gaby has realized the emotional toll that such work comes with, she decides to reconsider Paul's offer. It wouldn't be such a bad thing if Gaby didn't assume that Paul's encouragement to stay in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy was confirmation that he doesn't think she's cut out for those really difficult cases. Sean Struggles To Tell Jorge He Got The Job As A Sous Chef Sean officially gets word in Shrinking season 3, episode 9, that he got the job. He started out the show completely directionless, trapped in his trauma and rage, but with Jimmy and Paul's support, Sean is on the up and up. Of course, getting this sous chef job means that his time with Jorge on the food truck has to come to a close. Sean knows that this isn't news Jorge will take well, and given all they went through together while deployed, he's unsure whether he can take letting his friend down. It would be nice to say that Jorge handles the news well. However, it all turns out exactly as Sean expected. It really sucks, but it's important to acknowledge that this situation would have set Sean off, once upon a time. He manages to keep it together, and during his session with Paul, they both acknowledge how big a shift this is from the past. Jimmy Learns That His Dad Won't Be Staying For Alice's Graduation Jimmy puts up with his father's visit in Shrinking season 2, episode 9, for Alice's sake. The soon-to-be high school graduate loves her grandfather, so Jimmy does all he can to bite his tongue. He keeps it together when Randy gives Alice a vintage car, even though he had already purchased her a MINI Cooper. He smiles and nods when the man tells over-idealized stories from his childhood. However, when Sofi expresses that she likes Randy, Jimmy's resolve begins to crack. When Sofi asks, Jimmy explains that his father had a bad habit of finding something else to do rather than be there for big events. The little league game Randy bragged about was one of the very few instances in which he actually showed up. Even after Tia died, when Randy announced at the funeral that he would be there more for his son and granddaughter, he disappeared. This history makes it pretty difficult for Jimmy to accept when other people seem to enjoy being around his dad so much. While Jimmy tolerates that nearly all the characters in Shrinking like his dad, his anger begins to bubble over when Randy tells him he won't stay for Alice's graduation ceremony. Instead, he'll be going deep-sea fishing with a buddy. Randy doesn't even plan to tell Alice this until just before he leaves, and the car he gifted her was very clearly just a way to butter her up for the bad news. Jimmy is, understandably, enraged. Still, he doesn't fully express to Randy just how messed up his decision is. Instead, Jimmy takes out his anger on Sofi. Paul Leaves Gaby His Practice - But There Is A Catch Before Shrinking season 3, episode 9, ends things off with disaster, it provides a bit of balance with a sweet moment between Paul and Gaby. Earlier in the episode, Gaby agrees to take over Paul's practice. Later, while talking to Liz, she says she believes Paul must know she isn't cut out for trauma work, otherwise he would have guilted her about walking away from her dream. Liz knows immediately that this is bull. Paul is just being selfish because he is so eager for Gaby to carry on his legacy. She forces him to face the truth about his selfishness, and though he is initially reluctant, he realizes that Liz is right. Putting his career ahead of those he cares about has always been a fault of Paul's, but it's something he has been actively working on in Shrinking. After he realizes that he fell back into that old pattern, he makes it right. Paul tells Gaby that he wants her to take over his practice, but under one condition. She has to turn it into a trauma center. He tells her that he wasn't cut out for that sort of work, and he's known that ever since he lost his first patient. However, he acknowledges that Gaby is much stronger than he is. She was born to follow this dream, and Paul will make sure she has all the tools she needs. Why Jimmy Breaks Up With Sofi In Shrinking Season 3, Episode 9, Explained Gaby and Paul get a happy, heartwarming ending in Shrinking season 3, episode 9, but Jimmy and Sofi do not. Randy's news that he won't be staying for Alice's graduation was bad enough, but his words about Tia put Jimmy over the edge. He tells his son how much he likes Sofi, acknowledging that he and Tia never really saw eye to eye. He follows this up by saying that Sofi is a better match for Jimmy than Tia was. Randy's words are truly terrible here. It's been hard enough for Jimmy to finally start dating again, and anyone saying that this new woman in his life is a better fit than his late wife would be enough to throw off his progress. Coming from his father, specifically, makes Jimmy jump right into self-sabotage mode. He breaks things off with Sofi, essentially rebelling from Randy's suggestion that she is better than Tia simply because she likes him. There may still be hope for this relationship as Shrinking season 3 continues, but only if Jimmy can find the strength to deal with those daddy issues. 107 9.2/10 9/10 Shrinking 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-MA Comedy Drama Release Date January 27, 2023 Network Apple TV Showrunner Bill Lawrence Directors Bill Lawrence Writers Brett Goldstein, Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel 10 Images Close Cast See All
