Shopify took down a website promoting swastika t-shirts run by rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, for violating its terms of service. The site, advertised during the Super Bowl, was operational for a day before being shut down by Shopify President Harley Finkelstein.

Shopify has removed a website advertised by rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West , that sold t-shirts featuring swastikas. Ye ran a commercial during the Super Bowl on Sunday directing viewers to Yeezy.com, where a $20 t-shirt with a black swastika was the sole product offered. The site remained active until Tuesday morning. A Shopify spokesperson confirmed that the Canadian e-commerce company took down the site for violating its terms of service .

The storefront has been replaced with an error message stating, 'This store is unavailable.' Shopify President Harley Finkelstein stated on CNBC's 'Squawk on the Street' Tuesday that the website's owners had 'an entire day' to demonstrate they were not breaching the company's policies, which they failed to do. 'The moment we realized this wasn't actually a real commerce practice, they weren't actually engaging in authentic commerce, we pulled it down,' Finkelstein said. This incident follows a series of controversies surrounding Ye's public statements and actions. Months ago, Ye's Twitter account was suspended after he posted an image of a swastika merged with the Star of David, a symbol of Judaism. While his account was reinstated later, this latest action by Shopify highlights the ongoing concerns about Ye's behavior and its potential to incite hatred. In contrast to the swift action taken against Ye, Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has faced criticism for his handling of similar situations. Musk, who acquired X in 2022, has been involved in several controversies related to his social media posts and activities.
