Shopify has taken down a website selling swastika t-shirts promoted by rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, after the site violated its terms of service. The site was advertised during the Super Bowl and quickly removed by Shopify. The incident follows a pattern of controversy surrounding Ye's actions and online presence.
Shopify has removed a website promoted by rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West , which was selling t-shirts featuring swastikas. The rapper aired an advertisement during the Super Bowl on Sunday that directed viewers to Yeezy.com, where a single product was being promoted: a $20 t-shirt with a black swastika. The site remained online until Tuesday morning. According to a Shopify spokesperson, the Canadian e-commerce company took down the site for violating its terms of service.
The storefront now displays an error message stating, 'This store is unavailable.' Shopify President Harley Finkelstein explained on CNBC's 'Squawk on the Street' Tuesday that the website's owners had 'an entire day' to demonstrate they weren't breaking the company's policies, which they failed to do. 'The moment we realized this was not actually a real commerce practice, they weren't actually engaging in authentic commerce, we pulled it down,' Finkelstein said. This incident follows a series of controversial actions by Ye, including promoting a similar t-shirt design featuring a swastika merged with the Star of David, a prominent symbol of Judaism. The rapper's social media accounts have also been suspended multiple times due to his inflammatory and antisemitic remarks. Shopify's swift action to remove the website highlights the growing pressure on businesses to address hate speech and harmful content on their platforms.
