Shopify has taken down Ye's online store for selling T-shirts featuring a swastika, citing violations of platform rules and a lack of authentic commerce practices. This follows a wave of controversy surrounding Ye's antisemitic remarks, leading to the termination of his partnership with Adidas.
Shopify , a prominent e-commerce platform, has taken decisive action against Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West , by shutting down his online store for selling T-shirts displaying a swastika. The controversial T-shirts were made available for purchase on yeezy.com on Monday, following a local advertisement featuring Ye that aired during the Super Bowl in select markets. This advertisement directed viewers to the website.
However, on Tuesday, Shopify informed CBS MoneyWatch that it had ceased processing orders for the offending item. Subsequently, the yeezy.com store became inaccessible, displaying a message on its homepage indicating its unavailability.Shopify declared in a statement to CBS MoneyWatch that 'All merchants are responsible for following the rules of our platform. This merchant did not engage in authentic commerce practices and violated our terms, so we removed them from Shopify.' The swastika, adopted by Germany's Nazi Party as its emblem in 1920, carries a deeply disturbing historical association with Adolf Hitler and the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. Representatives for Ye have not yet responded to CBS MoneyWatch's request for comment. This incident comes amidst a tumultuous period for Ye, who previously enjoyed a highly lucrative partnership with Adidas. This collaboration was severed by Adidas after Ye made a series of inflammatory and widely condemned antisemitic remarks. In October 2022, Adidas issued a resolute statement condemning Ye's actions, stating, 'Adidas does not tolerate antisemitism and any other sort of hate speech.' They emphasized that 'Ye's recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company's values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.' Notably, at the time, Morningstar analyst David Swartz revealed to the Washington Post that Yeezy product sales had generated approximately $2 billion annually for the German sportswear giant, representing almost 10% of its annual revenue. The partnership between Adidas and Ye, initiated in 2016, produced highly sought-after footwear under the Yeezy label. Adidas had hailed the deal as 'the most significant partnership ever created between an athletic brand and a non-athlete.'
