Late yesterday, PowerSchool informed our IT Department that the Shaker Heights City School District is among the many global clients potentially affected by a cybersecurity incident involving their system. PowerSchool became aware of the breach on December 28, 2024. While we await further details, we are sharing this update to keep our community informed about this ongoing investigation.
According to PowerSchool, a compromised PowerSchool support account credential was used to access data within their Student Information System (SIS). Upon identifying the breach, PowerSchool took action by notifying law enforcement, securing the system and engaging CyberSteward, a professional advisor experienced in cybersecurity incidents. PowerSchool has reported receiving ‘reasonable assurances from the threat actor that the data has been deleted and no additional copies exist.’Initial information from PowerSchool suggests that Personally Identifiable Information (PII) for staff and students may have been accessed in some districts. This could include: names, addresses, email addresses, and dates of birth.Please note that Shaker Heights Schools does not retain staff or student Social Security numbers in the Student Information System.PowerSchool has stated: “While we are unaware of and do not expect any actual or attempted misuse of personal information or financial harm to impacted individuals as a result of this incident, PowerSchool will provide credit monitoring to affected adults and identity protection services to affected minors in accordance with regulatory and contractual obligations.” Cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike is working with PowerSchool to investigate the breach and issue a full report.We anticipate that PowerSchool will provide additional resources for affected individuals, and we will share these details as soon as they become available.
