A driver described as 'reckless' by police was shot and killed by a Utah Highway Patrol trooper on Interstate 15 in South Salt Lake on Friday. Police said the unidentified driver collided with the officer before pulling out a knife.
Utah Highway Patrol said the trooper attempted to stop the suspect after the collision before the person eventually stopped in the middle of the freeway. After the trooper and the suspect exited their vehicles, the suspect produced a knife, prompting the trooper to shoot at them. Following the shooting, additional officials arrived to provide medical aid before the suspect was declared dead on the highway.There are no other outstanding suspects at this time. The trooper was not injured but will be placed on administrative leave.The highway was closed to all traffic at 4500 South for hours before it was reopened at midnight.The highway shooting is the second on I-15 this month. On March 10, a vehicle was pulled over near Draper when a passenger with a gun started fighting with officers, leading to him being shot and killed. The driver of the vehicle was compliant with officers and later arrested for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance.Stay with fox13now.com and FOX 13 News for the latest on this breaking news story
