They’re a major source of traffic congestion, but not a single level crossing has been removed in Queensland since 2014. In Victoria, it’s been full steam ahead with 70 gone.
“Early work” had started on Brisbane’s northside to remove the Beams Road rail crossing at Carseldine, he said, however work has been held up by the federal government’s audit of infrastructure projects over $50 million.
“When they were elected, two in every five deaths nationwide at level crossings, and roughly 32 per cent of collisions at level crossings, occurred in Victoria,” he said. Bailey said Queensland drivers had to share some blame for the frequent collisions at rail crossings.Since 2020 there have been 30 collisions and one death at level crossings in Queensland.Queensland has 1176 level crossings: 81 across the south-east and 1095 in the regions.The Department of Transport and Main Roads is making rail safety improvements at 13 locations.
