The owners of dangerous dogs that kill or grievously harm a person could be sent to jail under proposed laws revealed on Sunday.

In addition, if a dog that’s been declared dangerous kills or grievously injures another animal, the owner could be fined up to $15,480 under the sweeping changes.

Under the reforms, certain breeds that are now restricted in Queensland would be banned. However, this would be phased in, so the owners of dogs under an existing restricted permit could keep them. These changes would have staggered start dates for different breeds to enable owners to seek a council permit, which would only be granted if it was safe to do so.
