The Gulf State Park Pier was heavily damaged by Hurricane Sally.
The bluefish George Simmons reeled up to the railing of the Gulf State Park Pier wasn’t a keeper, but he wasn’t disappointed. “We’ve been waiting on this day for a long time,” he said.
Matt Young, southwest district superintendent for Alabama State Parks, said that this day had essentially been on hold since the middle of September 2020. That’s when officials planned to cut the ribbon celebrating $2.4 million worth of upgrades to the facility. Then Hurricane Sally made landfall on Sept. 16.. What was left did reopen, but it no longer connected to the octagonal platform at its end. And that was the status quoYoung said the long wait was due to several factors.
“When you see those people every day, it’s a family,” she said. “My husband says they’re like family, but they won’t steal your Oreos.”“That’s one of the beautiful things about it,” he said of the pier. “It really is a gathering spot.”
