There are a lot of uncertainties about what it could do, and where it could go.
There is a 70 percent probability that a tropical depression could form in the Gulf of Mexico this weekend or early next week. It's too soon to say how, if or when it could affect areas along the Gulf Coast.The National Hurricane Center on Thursday night continued to watch a tropical disturbance near Hispaniola that could become a tropical depression soon.
The problem is, it could be in the eastern Gulf of Mexico or near the Florida Straits when that happens. A developing tropical system is notoriously difficult to track, since it doesn’t have an organized center of circulation, but the hurricane center outlined an area that incudes the eastern Gulf and part of the Florida peninsula as places to watch in the coming days.
A system has to have a defined center of circulation and sustained winds of at least 39 mph to be considered a tropical storm and get a name. The next name on the 2024 Atlantic storm list is Debby.
