That bill will go into effect October 1.
Under this act, students can take just two math and science classes to obtain a high school diploma, allowing them to focus on career and tech education coursesDOTHAN, Ala. - In an effort to strengthen Alabama’s workforce, Governor Kay Ivey signed the Alabama Workforce Pathways Act.
Normally students are required to complete four math and four science classes to obtain a high school diploma. However, under this act, students can take just two of each subject to focus on career and technical education courses. “Education is not one size fits all,” Geneva Regional Career Technical Center Principal B.T. Hinson said. The Alabama Workforce Pathways Act was introduced by Senator Donnie Chesteen to go directly into the workforce after high school. “We have a large percentage of students, I would say probably 50/50 who are not going to college, so how are we preparing them for the workforce and life after high school?,” Hinson asked. At the Geneva Regional Career Technical Center, students have certain CTE courses that count towards those required math and science courses. Hinson has seen students’ science scores improve since introducing more career-based science courses. “I think it helps focus the math and science to something they are interested in to real-world problems and real-world solutions. I really feel like instead of an abstract theory, we put it into a concrete action,” Hinson said. The act will also allow the State Department of Education to construct or upgrade other career technical education centers throughout the state.“You have students that are going to score high on the act, you got students that are very successful in those areas. If we can take the students that struggle, make it real for them and they can understand it, they are going to succeed. Therefore, you are going to see improvement in test scores and their abilities and performance overall. I think it is a great opportunity,” Hinson said. The Alabama Department of Education will be working with school boards in the state to successfully implement this.and receive the latest local news and weather straight to your email every morning.
