A Fairbanks man was arrested after investigators discovered approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine concealed within three stuffed toys. The drugs were being shipped from California to a woman at a drug rehabilitation center in Fairbanks.
A Fairbanks man was arrested Thursday evening after investigators found approximately two kilograms of methamphetamine sewn into the bodies of three stuffed toys. According to the charging documents, investigators found the meth-filled toys through a federal search warrant on Dec. 23. The package was being shipped from San Bernardino, California, to a woman living at a drug rehabilitation center in Fairbanks. Thursday morning, investigators placed a tracker and beacon inside the package.
According to the charging documents, they also sprayed the inside of the box with “clue spray,” an invisible substance that will stick to the person who opens the box and glow under an ultraviolet light. The package was delivered on Thursday around noon. The woman arrived at her apartment around 4:30 p.m. and put the package into an SUV. She then drove to a Circle K gas station, where investigators saw the package transferred to a dark-colored Mercedes sedan. Spann then drove to an apartment complex, where he was seen by investigators throwing the package away in the dumpster around 6:28 p.m. A search warrant of Spann’s apartment showed one pound of crystal methamphetamine, a box of baggies and a digital scale hiding inside a small safe in the closet. A semiautomatic handgun with a fully loaded extended magazine was also found in a dresser. Spann admitted to investigators that he was expecting the package to contain five pounds of methamphetamine. According to the complaint, he said that he pays $4,000 per pound of methamphetamine and sells it for $5,000 per pound. He also admitted to the meth, cocaine and gun that were found in his apartment. Spann was charged with two felonies — third-degree drug misconduct and second-degree weapons misconduct. Spann had his arraignment on Friday at the Fairbanks Courthouse. His bail was set at $20,000.
