A widespread cold snap is set to bring freezing temperatures and snow to much of the United States. Cities across the country are preparing for the storm, deploying snow removal equipment, opening warming centers, and urging residents to take precautions.

Preparations are underway across the United States as a major cold snap threatens to bring below-freezing temperatures and snow to much of the country. An arctic air mass is forecast to hit the Atlanta area, sending temperatures plummeting Sunday evening. The National Weather Service in Atlanta warns that some locations could experience sub-freezing temperatures for several days. 'Please begin to take precautions this weekend,' the agency urged on X.

Meanwhile, in Connecticut, Governor Ned Lamont announced that over 600 snowplows and specialized snow removal equipment are ready to be deployed as the state anticipates 4 to 10 inches of snowfall beginning late Sunday afternoon and lasting into Monday morning. Crews will be on standby throughout the weekend, working diligently until roads are clear of snow and ice. Lamont urged motorists to plan ahead, stating, 'This storm is being forecast well in advance, which is why now is the time for motorists to plan ahead and get to where they need to be before the snowfall begins on Sunday afternoon.' He added, 'Stay home if you can and watch football. If you need to drive, take it slow, and if you approach a plow, please keep a safe distance and allow them to do their jobs.'A winter weather alert has been issued for Sunday and Monday by the New York City Emergency Management Department. The storm is predicted to bring 2 to 5 inches of snow, with the potential for higher accumulations in certain areas. Temperatures are also expected to drop below freezing on Monday, raising concerns about hazardous travel conditions. New York City Mayor Eric Adams emphasized the city's preparedness, stating, 'We’re expecting snow Sunday and a cold snap hitting the city tomorrow night through Wednesday. To keep streets safe and clean, city agencies will be implementing snow clearing protocol and reaching out to connect unsheltered New Yorkers to shelters.' Several cities are opening warming centers to provide shelter for those in need during the frigid weather. In Alabama, centers will be available across Dale, Mobile, and Houston counties. Columbus, Ohio, will have five community centers functioning as warming stations, while Houston Mayor John Whitmire announced the opening of 10 warming centers. Chicago officials provided a list of open centers on the city website
