The National Weather Service warns of the dangers of prolonged cold weather for homeless individuals in the Bay Area, highlighting the need for increased support and resources.
The National Weather Service warned that the ongoing cold weather in the Bay Area poses a serious danger to homeless and unsheltered individuals. Santa Clara County alone has an estimated 10,000 unhoused residents, according to a report from the Housing and Urban Development department. Over the past year, 200 of these individuals died, a fact commemorated by the county in a memorial last week. San Jose, within the county, has approximately 6,000 unhoused people.
City leaders acknowledge the ongoing challenge of protecting this vulnerable population. During the summer, a significant effort was made to provide assistance to those struggling with extreme heat. The NWS emphasized that this extended period of cold weather could lead to hypothermia, particularly for individuals over 65 years old, who are most susceptible to its dangers. The county reported that over a quarter of the 197 homeless deaths this year involved seniors. Santa Clara County does offer a limited number of warming centers located in libraries and community centers. San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan expressed his ambition to open 1,000 managed safe spaces within the next year. He has also advocated for the construction of hundreds of tiny homes and portable homes
