Dallas Mavericks had a chance to pull to 10th in the Western Conference standings, but instead fell a game behind the Thunder in the NBA playoff race.
Translation: Dallas needs to go 4-0 or at worst 3-1 and hope for a lot of help. For a Mavericks team that has lost seven of its last eight games, nine of its last 12; and 16 of 21, that’s essentially asking for a miracle.
Early on Dallas looked like a team intent on seizing a play-in spot, especially during a personal 10-point Hardaway run that pushed the Mavericks’ lead to as much as 20-12.The most damaging stretch was the end of the first quarter, when a missed Josh Green layup, a Christian Wood offensive foul and a Green turnover helped turn a 35-31 game into a 44-31 deficit.
“Way different,” he said. “I thought we were going to be up there. But we obviously aren’t, so it’s way different than I thought.”“Obviously there’s hope, yeah,” he said. “I always say you’ve got to hope to the last moment. You’ve got to believe you can make it, so we’ve got to believe.”
