Appearing on the ESPN set moments after the announcement, Nowitzki described the honor as “super-exciting and super-emotional.” He said that when Naismith Hall of Fame chairman Jerry Colangelo called with the news “I tried to stay all cool on the phone” while in reality raising his arms triumphantly.

Nowitzki, 44, will become the ninth person with Mavericks ties to be inducted into the Hall, but only the third player inductee who spent a significant portion of his career in Dallas. From a global basketball perspective, of course, the Nowitzki lens is considerably wider. He is Wurzburg, Germany-born. He is the greatest European NBA player ever and was the first European-born player to win the NBA Most Valuable Player Award, in the 2006-2007 season.and he led the Mavericks to their only championship in 2011, when he also was named Finals MVP.
