Luka Doncic confirmed to The News on Saturday that he plans to compete for Slovenia in Aug. 11 and 12th exhibition games against Spain and the United States,...
Doncic already had committed to play for Slovenia in the Aug. 25-Sept. 10 World Cup, but until Saturday it was unclear whether he would play in the Aug. 11-12 exhibition games
Former Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki congratulates guard Luka Doncic on a good season after losing Game 5 to the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Western Conference Finals at the Chase Center in San Francisco, May 26, 2022.MIAMI -- USA Basketball announced three weeks ago that the American team would play in a three-team exhibition series on August 11th and 12th in Málaga, Spain, seemingly creating a conundrum for Mavericks star Luka Doncic.
Doncic already had committed to playing for Slovenia in the Aug. 25 through September 10 World Cup in Asia, but Slovenia’s exhibitions against Spain on August 11 and the United States on August 12 in Málaga, Spain conflict with the dates of Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki’s induction to the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame.
Nowitzki’s long-expected inclusion in the Naismith Hall’s Class of 2023 was confirmed with Saturday’s formal announcement in Houston of the 12 inductees. Doncic toldon Saturday that he spoke to Nowitzki by phone on Friday and congratulated him, but as much as Doncic would like to be in Springfield, Mass. for Nowitzki’s induction, national team duties beckon. Though they are exhibitions, the games are an important part of Slovenia’s training and ramp-up to the World Cup.
“I’m not gonna make it,” Doncic said of the Hall of Fame festivities. “We play in Málaga against the United States and Spain, so I’m not going to make it.”
