Day one of Lorain County’s 4th Annual Naloxone Street Outreach was on Monday. Tuesday they will be in the city of Lorain.
More than 50 volunteers walked the streets of Elyria handing out naloxone kits Monday to neighbors.Just last year, the department and its volunteers gave out more than 600 kits.Juan Schwartzman was one of the researchers who spent weeks studying maps and data.
Looking for for overdose hot spots. Once they knew where overdoses were happening more often they sent their volunteers there to knock on doors with the kits.“At first, some of them have asked do I need this,” said Meluch. “And we always say yes”.According to the health department in 2023 there were more than 118 overdose deaths in Lorain County. In 2024, that number went down, with only 62 lives lost.
