Letters to the Editor

Maria Shriver, left, Kate Cox, of Dallas and Latorya Beasley of Birmingham, Ala., stand before President Joe Biden delivers the State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress at the U.S. Capitol, March 7, 2024, in Washington.Re: “SOTU reaction: My son had Trisomy 18; I chose a different path — Dallas-area nonprofit supports families of children with life-limiting diagnoses,” by Kelly Crawford, March 8 column.

Hopefully at some point someone will develop one site that lists all the invaluable organizations here whose sole purpose is to provide loving care to those with a specific need during and after their problem pregnancy.I’m glad that Crawford is happy with her choice, after consultation with her doctors, not to terminate her pregnancy.

While I think the choice Crawford made was a brave one, at least she had a choice. And saying it was the only truly compassionate choice is very judgmental. Whatever happened to “judge not lest ye be judged”?I can’t imagine the pain Kelly Crawford faced when given a Trisomy 18 diagnosis. But she used the wrong term to describe continuing her pregnancy to term — choice. She had no choice if she lived in Texas. The state would have required her to give birth.

Women were never forced to have abortions, but they are forced against their will to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term. The vague, undocumented “study from 2015″ Crawford referenced about post-traumatic stress is of no consequence when it comes to constitutional rights. But I do wonder what studies will show in a few years now that forced birth is the only option? Crawford states many families with this diagnosis are advised to end their child’s life.
