Letters to the Editor

Readers praise the president’s State of the Union address; support the Dallas Park Board; are glad Keller ISD reverses its decision on The Laramie Project; and give kudos for the airlifts in Gaza.

Re: “Park board keeps its power for now — Commission rejects measure to move department under city manager,” Wednesday Metro & Business story.Amendments seeking to eliminate Dallas Park and Recreation Board oversight and have the Park and Recreation Department director report to the city manager were misguided. The Park Board was established by charter to handle and oversee matters related to City Park and Fair Park.

Under the direction of the Park Board and its leadership team, the nationally accredited and award-winning department attracts about 30 million annual park visitors, evidence that parks are important to Dallasites. This great work is supported by residents voting passage of large bond programs for the park system, which includes an extensive network of advocacy groups, community partnerships and management partnerships.

It didn’t stop personal politics between Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson and T.C. Broadnax from creating a dysfunctional relationship. Thinking the manager-council system removes politics is like thinking observers have no effect on quantum experiments. So we should even the scales and give the mayor more power. Since he’s on the front lines and gets more grief, his voting share should be increased by at least three. He also should get some veto power, as Rawlings suggested.
