Every year, we gather in the Hotel San José parking lot and taste chili together.”Anyone can sign up to volunteer and cook chili, and this year there will be 11 teams made up of Austin locals and restaurant chefs. “We have 11 different chilies that we’re going to try—hopefully some spicy, some with or without beans,” Tillman said. Supporting Free Lunch is a major highlight of the event. “Free Lunch is an amazing local organization in Austin. It’s an artist collective that focuses on feeding the community, so providing Free Lunch. We’re really excited to support them. We support them yearly through this event, and they also have other opportunities, like events and their quarterly magazine, to help support their mission. We have two winners: one chosen by our judges and one by the attendees, which is really exciting. Winners get this pot as well as bragging rights, of course. The pot will be full of goodies. Tickets are $25 to taste, and you can purchase them either at Jo’s inside the Hotel San José lounge, at the bar, or in the parking lot. But beyond tasting chili, you’ll be in Austin at the heart of South Congress, soaking up all the energy of the neighborhood!” Tillman said.
