) - Hundreds gathered in downtown Mobile Tuesday night for the first-ever Panini Senior Bowl Cook-off, sampling sandwiches from local chefs and restaurants while supporting Senior Bowl charities. The event at Bienville Square featured groups making different kinds of sandwiches for the community to try, said judge Jocelyn Martin.
“We have about ten to twelve groups here making a bunch of different kind of sandwiches and they’re giving them out to the community and everybody gets the chance to come down and try,” Martin said. Panini Pete with the Panini Pete Hospitality Group organized the event, which included prizes for winners. “We got this great championship belt, we got cash prizes, we got a bunch of local chefs, restaurants, tours, clubs, it’s just a great night,” Panini Pete said. A panel of judges determined the top three teams, who won prizes. The crowd also participated through a “People’s Choice” category.“It’s just a lot of fun to come and meet more people in the community, get to talk to these people that own the restaurants and get to see them on a personal level rather than just a business,” Martin said. Rocky Fremin with sponsor Rock and Roll Offs said the event’s emphasis on local businesses made it special. “It’s free to start off with so come try some fantastic food from all the local vendors and they’re all local restaurants,” Fremin said. Kahalli Shaw-Watson with Bishop State Community College’s culinary program said events like this can inspire younger people. “I also feel like it shows many kids and people that they’re is more opportunities in the culinary world and I feel like a lot of times people think it’s limited to certain big places that they see but they’re also a lot of small businesses that are just as good and offer just as great opportunities and skills,” Shaw-Watson said. The cook-off featured a wide variety of paninis with different meats, cheeses and other fillings. By the end of the night, sandwiches were running low and attendees had full stomachs. The event helps kick off Senior Bowl weekend. The Senior Bowl game draws thousands to Mobile each year. The night’s winner will receive recognition at this weekend’s Senior Bowl game and be acknowledged on the field in front of thousands.Jury finds defendants in Mobile’s backpack drug trial guilty on all but one countDaphne man gets life sentence for aggravated child abuse
