Vice President JD Vance’s wife, Usha Vance, is opening up about the couple’s decision to expand their family. 'People have asked me if we're going to have a fourth baby, and I've never closed the door on that,' Usha, 40, said in an interview with NBC News airing on Monday, March 30.
'I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn't feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child.' JD, 41, and Usha already share Ewan, 8, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. In January, the couple revealed Usha is pregnant with their fourth child. 'We did feel very complete with a third child, in many ways,' Usha said. 'We have our daughter, who's amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn't sure. But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about that possibility.” She continued, “And so if there was a chance, I should take it. I knew that I'd be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I'd be happy if we had four. And so here we are.' The second lady shared that she recently learned that the last time a vice presidential family had a baby in office was when Schuyler Colfax and wife Ellen welcomed a son in 1870. Usha noted that her current pregnancy is “going well” compared to her previous experiences, when JD was not in the office. 'There's some differences, obviously,” she said. “I have to dress up a lot more. I enjoyed my last pregnancy, there were a lot of sweat pants. I was working from home, sometimes put a blazer on over what was under.” She continued, 'So there are some little differences. And then our transportation is rather different. I have to ride in the back seat now, so I get carsick all the time.' Outside of motherhood, Usha is preparing to launch her podcast, “Storytime With the Second Lady,” and remains someone for her husband to lean on. “There are conversations all the time,” Usha said. “I do really like to understand what’s going on in his world, what he’s really focused on, what concerns he has, because it’s a marriage. I mean, I want to be supportive of him, and if I don’t really know what’s going on, then I can’t do that.” While JD has an entire staff of policy advisers, Usha shared that he talks to her “when something is troubling him” or “when he really wants to talk through something that feels more, kind of, intensely personal or important personally.” Usha shared that the pair “absolutely” have disagreements, noting that they have “totally different backgrounds.” “I’m not his staffer. I’m not involved in this in any professional sense. … There’s no expectation that we are going to see eye to eye on everything,” Usha said. Usha continued, “The expectation is that we are going to be open-minded and have a conversation, and that I’ll provide meaningful input from the perspective of someone who loves him and wants him to succeed. So even if we don’t agree — I think it’s always very productive.” When asked about JD potentially running for president, Usha acknowledged “that’s not the priority in our conversations,” noting that she’ll “have a better sense” of her husband’s plans next year.
