For most movies, losing IMAX screens this quickly would feel like the moment the hype starts to cool off. But that is not what is happening with Project Hail Mary. The Ryan Gosling sci-fi hit is still pulling in huge audiences, and its IMAX run has been such a big part of that story that the premium-format giant is already talking about bringing it back.
In other words, even as a major new family blockbuster moves in, Project Hail Mary has already won in one key area: demand. The numbers make that pretty clear. After two weekends, Project Hail Mary has earned roughly $317 million worldwide, with about $60 million of that total coming from IMAX alone. That means the format accounted for around 20% of the film’s global box office so far, which puts it right in the usual sweet spot for a major tentpole release and shows just how important those giant-screen screenings have been to the movie’s rise. Now the film is about to give up those screens, at least for the moment. Starting Wednesday, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is taking over IMAX auditoriums worldwide for a two-week run, with Japan operating on a slightly different schedule because the film opens there on April 24. After that, IMAX’s next scheduled title is Lee Cronin’s The Mummy, beginning April 17. But here is where Project Hail Mary has managed something Mario has not even had the chance to do yet: it has generated enough demand that IMAX is already promising more opportunities for audiences to see it again. In its latest box office release, the company said Project Hail Mary will “remain a recurring fixture in the coming weeks and months as exhibitors find opportunities to bring it back for audiences in search of the most immersive and theatrical experience.” Related Remembering the Icons of Film — Collider Movie Quiz We pay tribute to the talents who helped define Hollywood. Posts By Macklen Makhloghi How Good Is 'Project Hail Mary'? Collider's review, as penned by Ross Bonaime, stated that Project Hail Mary is a big, smart sci-fi movie that still knows how to have fun. It mixes high-stakes space drama with real heart and a lot of humor, and that balance is what makes it work so well. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller bring a lot of energy to the film, making it feel fresh, exciting, and surprisingly emotional."Project Hail Mary is the type of rousing, exciting blockbuster filmmaking that we rarely see these days," writes Bonaime,"at least not at the levels that Lord and Miller are working at here. This is the kind of grand adventure that’ll have you bowled over laughing one minute and tearing up the next before making you applaud the experience as the credits roll." He continued, praising the duo: "Lord and Miller have created a new sci-fi classic, an incredible adaptation of Weir’s novel, and a film that deserves to be a part of 2027 Oscar consideration already. With Project Hail Mary, Lord and Miller have crafted a film that’s truly out of this world in every possible way." 9 10 Project Hail Mary Like Follow Followed PG-13 Science Fiction Adventure Drama Release Date March 20, 2026 Runtime 156 Minutes Director Christopher Miller, Phil Lord Writers Drew Goddard, Andy Weir Producers Ryan Gosling, Amy Pascal, Andy Weir, Aditya Sood, Christopher Miller, Phil Lord, Rachel O'Connor Cast See All
