Usha Vance shared in an exclusive NBC News interview how she and Vice President J.D. Vance decided to add a fourth child to their family while he is in office. The second lady spoke with NBC News senior national correspondent Kate Snow about their growing family and becoming the first vice presidential family to have a baby while in office since 1870.
An excerpt of their interview aired on TODAY March 30. 'People have asked me if we're going to have a fourth baby, and I've never closed the door on that,' Vance said. 'I grew up in a family of two, and I thought that was a great number. And then I had two kids, and I thought — I didn't feel quite done, right? So I really wanted to have a third child.' The Vances have three children under the age of 9: Ewan, 8, Vivek, 6, and Mirabel, 4. The couple announced in January that they are expecting their fourth child. 'We did feel very complete with a third child, in many ways,' Vance said. 'We have our daughter, who's amazing, and it was great. And so I just wasn't sure. But as time passed, I realized that I was feeling more and more excited about that possibility. 'And so if there was a chance, I should take it,' she continued. 'I knew that I'd be happy if we only had three kids, and I knew that I'd be happy if we had four. And so here we are.' The last vice presidential family to have a baby in office was when Schuyler Colfax, the vice president under President Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen welcomed a son in 1870. 'I learned that after I was pregnant,' Vance said before laughing. The second lady, 40, also shared how this pregnancy compares to her last three. 'It's going well,' she said. 'There's some differences, obviously. I have to dress up a lot more. I enjoyed my last pregnancy, there were a lot of sweat pants. I was working from home, sometimes put a blazer on over what was under. 'So there are some little differences. And then our transportation is rather different. I have to ride in the back seat now, so I get carsick all the time.' In her wide-ranging interview with Snow, Vance also spoke about being a trusted advisor to the vice president, whether J.D. Vance will run for president in 2028 and more.
