Hulu has undergone major changes over the years, including a gradual integration into its sister streamer, Disney+, but it's still the home of some of the biggest shows on television. One of those shows, Love Story, just hit a major milestone ahead of its upcoming finale.
According to FX's official press site, Love Story has pulled in a whopping 52 million hours of view time on Hulu during its run. That effectively makes it Hulu's most-watched show, beating out other big-name shows like The Bear, Paradise, and Only Murders in the Building. True to its name, Love Story is a tale of romance; that romance is between John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy , as the show chronicles their whirlwind courtship and marriage. While Love Story has drawn criticism, particularly from the Kennedy family, it's proven to be a critical darling and a ratings hit. Currently sitting at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, most reviews praise how creator Connor Hines and executive producer Ryan Murphy brought the Kennedys' romance to life. But there are other factors that make Love Story stand out, particularly in its casting. 'Love Story' Hooks Viewers With Its Combination of Romance & Tragedy Like any good romance, Love Story lives and dies on its casting, and the two leads have the perfect amount of chemistry. Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon oscillate between bitter spats and passionate embraces to the point where you forget that there are two people playing real-life figures. Take the penultimate episode,"Exit Strategy", which finds the couple unpacking their feelings after the tragic death of Princess Diana. It's effectively a one-act play, given plenty of depth and passion by Kelly and Pidgeon's performances, and one of the biggest reasons Love Story isa compelling watch. Speaking with Collider's Tania Hussain, writer Juli Weiner stressed the importance of highlighting that JFK Jr. and Carolyn were real, flawed people. "They make decisions, or they speak to each other in a certain way, they're obviously doing it from a place of love and trying to work on the marriage and trying to maintain this love that they had that was so epic. It touches people now, even 30 years later. I think we never wanted — there are no villains, there are no good guys, there are no bad guys, just two people are trying to do their best, and that was something that we thought about the entire series." This also applies to the rest of the cast, who help bring the Kennedy dynasty to life. Chief among them are Grace Gummer as JFK Jr.'s sister, Caroline Kennedy, and Naomi Watts as his mother, Jacqueline. Every time Watts is in a scene, she exudes a sadness that seems to penetrate the screen. It'll crack even the hardest of hearts and remind viewers that this is a woman dealing with the tragedy of seeing her husband murdered in front of her. Ryan Murphy's shows might be controversial, but they tend to excel in terms of casting, and Love Story is no different.
