Prime Video has a variety of fantasy shows for its subscribers, among them an underrated gem that is one of the best fantasy shows of the decade. Prime Video has produced great TV shows from different genres, with some of them now ranking among the best TV shows of all time, but many others haven't gotten the recognition they deserve.
Titles like The Wheel of Time are considered among Prime Video's best fantasy shows, but the platform has other equally great or even better shows that remain hidden. Such is the case for Good Omens, starring David Tennant and Michael Sheen, and which hasn't had the success and popularity it deserves. Good Omens Is Unlike Other Fantasy TV Shows Of The 2020s Based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel of the same name, Good Omens was released on Prime Video in 2019. Good Omens follows Crowley and Aziraphale , a demon and an angel, respectively. Crowley was once an angel, but was expelled from Heaven and became a demon. However, he and Aziraphale have remained friendly ever since. Crowley and Aziraphale have crossed paths at different points in time, and despite their opposite views, they usually end up working together. Good Omens season 1 sees them teaming up to find the Antichrist and prevent the apocalypse. Season 2 sees them joining forces once more after Archangel Gabriel arrives at Aziraphale’s bookstore without his memories. Good Omens mixes comedy, fantasy, drama, and biblical elements without being a religious show. The chemistry between Tennant and Sheen elevates the show and is a key element of what makes the show so engaging, charming, and entertaining, with the bonus of a mystery in every season. Amid comedy and religious satire, Good Omens explores complex themes like humanism, other philosophical branches, morality, and more. On top of that, Good Omens has a variety of characters, both human and supernatural, offering different styles, perspectives, ideas, and overall representation. Why Good Omens Became An Underrated Show Despite Its Success At the time of writing, Good Omens holds an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 94% popcornmeter score, but despite its great reception, it’s still an underrated show. Unlike other Prime Video shows, Good Omens hasn’t been heavily marketed, so it’s not a well-known TV show despite its cast, quality, and source material. Good Omens’ religious satire is one of its strengths, but it can also be one of its biggest obstacles when it comes to reaching a wider audience, as those unfamiliar with the show’s tone and characters might get the wrong idea about it. Still, despite it not being widely known, Good Omens has built a solid and devoted fanbase, which has greatly contributed to the show continuing its course. Good Omens Will End With Its Third Season Unfortunately, Good Omens is approaching its end as it prepares for its third season, but it won’t be a traditional season. Good Omens season 2 ended on a massive cliffhanger regarding Crowley and Aziraphale’s relationship and the latter’s new role on Earth, leaving viewers waiting to see how all of that will be resolved. Good Omens was initially going to have a proper third season, but those plans took a turn. Good Omens season 3 was announced as a six-episode season in December 2023, but production on it was suspended in 2024 following Neil Gaiman’s sexual assault accusations. Shortly after that, Gaiman announced he was stepping back from Good Omens while Amazon held crisis talks . A couple of weeks later, Amazon decided to shorten season 3 of Good Omens from six episodes to a single 90-minute episode to close the show. Of course, the biggest concern is how the Good Omens finale will cover everything it needs to, which was planned for six episodes, in just one feature-length episode.
