Since Game of Thrones became a cultural phenomenon, every streaming service has searched for its own epic fantasy series. While some have achieved success and built their own audience, others have become severely underrated or even forgotten.

The latter is the case for Prime Video's Carnival Row, a 2019 series starring Orlando Bloom and Cara Delevingne, which takes a unique approach to the genre. Though it takes place in a world full of mythical creatures, Carnival Row's setting is far from magical. Instead, these beings have left their war-torn home in search of a better life, only to become mistreated immigrants in an overpopulated city. This concept not only sets Carnival Row apart from most epic fantasy series but also allows the story to explore the social issues of prejudice and racism. Carnival Row remains a standout in the expanding genre. By exploring modern problems in a fantasy environment, the series offers a new approach to creating a magical world, based on the crime of a magical city rather than. Unfortunately, the Prime Video series only released two seasons before its cancellation. However, the 18 episodes make Carnival Row an addictive binge-watch as it tells a dark and socially aware story. 'Carnival Row' Is a Crime Drama in a Fantasy World Epic fantasy series are, more often than not, focused on a war for power, but Carnival Row takes a different approach, exploring the criminal underworld of a fantastical city. The series follows Philo , an inspector in the Republic of the Burgue, who is the only law enforcement official willing to investigate crimes in the area designated for magical refugees, known as Carnival Row. When a string of unnatural murders breaks out among the fae, Philo dedicates himself to solving the mystery and protecting the fae despite the prejudice against them. With magical forces at work, Philo's case is unpredictable, revealing secrets about Philo's own past, but it offers a backdrop for a unique fantasy story. Philo's story may be central, but it is only one part of the series. Carnival Row also follows Vignette , who is a recently arrived faerie and former flame of Philo's. Vignette quickly falls in with a rebel fae group called the Black Raven, placing her on the other side of the law as she unexpectedly reunites with Philo. Like many other fantasy series, Carnival Row explores the political side of the fantasy world, featuring Chancellor Absalom Breakspear , who is in a position to help or hurt the relations between the humans and the fae. However, his story takes a dark turn as his son's kidnapping pushes his political rivalries to a breaking point. These storylines work together to make Carnival Row gritty, even for a bloody fantasy series. Related Stellar 10/10 Fantasy Shows That Nobody Remembers Today Magic so good it shouldn't be missed. Posts 1 By Lisa Nordin 'Carnival Row' Is a Socially Aware Fantasy Series While many series are impacted by real-world social issues, Carnival Row explores them directly. By emphasizing the struggles of the magical refugees and the constant prejudice against the fae, the series delves into timely stories. The Burgue's mistreatment of the residents of Carnival Row is central to the story, as the leaders of the city argue about the growing fae population while never actually speaking to them. However, Carnival Row goes further than that, including an additional storyline that follows Agreus , a wealthy faun trying to make a place for himself among the elite. The city's influential members expect all the fae who are not confined to Carnival Row to be servants, but Agreus is a rare exception, forcing him to face significant barriers from his own neighbors despite the fortune he's built. Between Argreus' struggle to gain acceptance and the focus on how undervalued the fae population is, Carnival Row offers an interesting commentary on real issues, making it just as relevant today. Incorporating such prejudices into the fantasy world adds an element of realism that Carnival Row's magical setting could easily have lost, grounding the show. More importantly, these themes open up a larger conversation that is even more timely today than it was when the series premiered seven years ago. Yet, because the series recontextualizes the issue for the fantasy world, it avoids becoming too heavy-handed. With a fascinating story, dark twist, and a grim interpretation of a magical world, Carnival Row still delivers everything fantasy fans could ask for.
