Michael Sheen's Aziraphale and David Tennant's Crowley pose together for the Good Omens poster

Eagle-eyed fans have already found a deep-cut easter egg in Colleen Doran's Good Omens graphic novel, but this reference doesn't have anything to do with Terry Pratchett or Neil Gaiman. Good Omens' humor thrives on the mundane absurdity of the divine and the bureaucratic comedy of the end of the world.

This tone is preserved in the television series, where Michael Sheen and David Tennant's chemistry elevates the story’s central thesis: that humanity’s blessing of free will is far more interesting than the rigid certainties of Heaven or Hell. Terry Pratchett’s solo work, particularly his sprawling Discworld series, is permeated by a unique brand of self-awareness that uses fantasy as a razor-sharp lens for social commentary. Pratchett’s voice often offers dry, encyclopedic observations on the sheer ridiculousness of human nature. His ability to make a reader laugh at a pun on one page and contemplate the ethics of justice on the next remains the gold standard for intellectual satire in fantasy. Any adaptation that of Pratchett's work needs to capture the right balance between deep worldbuilding and clever yet surprisingly familiar humor. The Good Omens Graphic Novel Features A Viral Meme Easter Egg The Olympics' Most Famous Meme Makes A Surprise Appearance In Good Omens Colleen Doran's Good Omens graphic novel is packed with details fans of Terry Pratchett's work will appreciate, but its best easter egg isn't connected to Pratchett's 1990 fantasy novel. As Doran's graphic novel copmares the way demons dance to a "British group in the Eurovision song contest," one of the demons depicted performs a familiar dance move. This background demon pulls off a perfect Kangaroo pose, the most iconic move in Rachael"Raygun" Gunn's breakdance routine at the 2024 Paris Olympics. At first, the demon's pose may resemble Michael Jackson's"Thriller" choreography, but it soon becomes pretty clear that this is almost a one-to-one reproduction of Raygun's internet-breaking dance. The narration jokes, "demons aren't bound by physics," which is right along the lines of all the memes that Raygun's showing at the Olympics inspired in 2024. The other demons in the panel strike similar poses, though none of them seem to be ripped straight from Raygun's infamous breakdancing showcase. Comics, Manga, And Graphic Novels Like To Hide Hilarious Meme Easter Eggs Internet Culture Has Become An Inherent Part Of Every Visual Medium Memes and obscure pop culture references provide a wealth of clever nods to an increasingly internet-savvy audience. This practice often involves redrawing a famous internet moment into the established lore of a character. For instance, in Alyssa Wong and Martin Coccolo’s Deadpool #1 , Wade Wilson recreates the"Pepe Silvia" conspiracy meme from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with Deadpool standing in front of a red-stringed corkboard mimicking Charlie’s frantic posture. Although, knowing Deadpool, this is only one of dozens and dozens of meme recreations Wade has pulled off in the past few years. Other meme easter eggs are even harder to spot, and they're even funnier as a result. In Brian Michael Bendis and David Marquez’s Defenders #1 , a hospital scene involving Luke Cage and Jessica Jones subtly recreates the infamous"Loss" meme, the four-panel minimalist template from the webcomic Ctrl+Alt+Del that social media transformed from a tragic short story into an absurdist phenomenon. On the manga side of things, the 2017 Yo-Kai Watch comics features a sneaky recreation of the"Supa Hot Fire" rap battle meme, one of the most iconic videos to come out of Vine. Related I Still Can't Believe My Favorite Part Of Henry Cavill's Deadpool & Wolverine Cameo Was In The Script And I'm So Glad It Was Included In The MCU Movie Henry Cavill's Deadpool & Wolverine cameo was exceptional, but I'm surprised to learn that one seemingly improvised moment was actually in the script. Posts 5 By Ollie Bradley The instances are too many to count. Even the infamous"distracted boyfriend" meme found its way into Captain Marvel #28, and Salvador Larroca traced a stock photo of a man suffering chest pain for Invincible Iron Man #508, which became something of a meme in and of itself. Memes have become so pervasive that sometimes they loop back around. For example, the Spider-Verse movies and Spider-Man: No Way Home both embrace the"Spider-Man pointing" meme, and Shadow the Hedgehog canonically likes to watch Latin American telenovelas in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. 21 8.4/10 Good Omens 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Comedy Fantasy Release Date 2019 - 2026-00-00 Showrunner Neil Gaiman, Douglas Mackinnon Directors Douglas Mackinnon Writers Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett Cast See All
