Sherlock and John Watson in BBC's Sherlock TV show
The BBC’s Sherlock is one of the best modern Sherlock Holmes TV shows, and almost a decade after its end, it finally has a replacement. Created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes made his debut in 1887 in A Study in Scarlet, and since then, he has been one of the most popular and influential literary characters of all time.
Sherlock Holmes has been adapted to all types of media for decades, and in recent years, his adaptations have found great success on TV. One of them is the BBC’s Sherlock, which is now among the best detective TV shows of all time. Sherlock brought the character to the modern world, and though its final seasons weren’t the best, it’s still one of the most popular adaptations of the Great Detective. Sherlock ran for four seasons, ending in 2017, and though there have been other Holmes adaptations since then, none have actually replaced it… until now, thanks to Prime Video’s Young Sherlock. How Young Sherlock Is Different From The BBC's Sherlock Created by Matthew Parkhill, Young Sherlock is inspired by Andrew Lane’s book series Young Sherlock Holmes, and was developed by Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie. Unlike Sherlock, Young Sherlock stays true to the time setting in Conan Doyle’s books, thus taking the audience back to the Victorian era to meet a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes . After getting out of prison for pickpocketing, Holmes begins working at Oxford University as a scout. There, he meets James Moriarty , a brilliant student with whom he quickly bonds, and the newly arrived Chinese Princess Shou’an . One day, Sherlock is framed for the murder of an Oxford teacher, and so he and Moriarty set out to clear his name and solve the crime. However, their investigation leads them to uncover a big, deadly conspiracy, as well as some dark and disturbing secrets from the Holmes family. Young Sherlock was an instant success, quickly climbing to the top of Prime Video’s Top 10. Aside from the obvious differences, like their time setting and one following a young and inexperienced Sherlock, there are other key differences between Young Sherlock and Sherlock. The former goes deeper into the detective’s personal struggles, as he carries a lot of trauma, grief, and guilt over his sister’s death, and the investigation has an emotional impact on him. Sherlock, on the other hand, mostly focused on the cases and didn’t do much to explore the deepest and most personal parts of the title character. Young Sherlock also adds a lot more to the character’s backstory and helps the audience understand why he is the way he is a lot better, and this also happens with Moriarty, showing how his villain turn began. Young Sherlock Has A More Promising Future Than Sherlock Both Young Sherlock and Sherlock succeeded with critics and general audiences, but, so far, the former has a more promising future than the BBC’s show. Young Sherlock season 1 feels like a teaser of what’s to come for the young detective and his friend and future enemy, as they just solved their first mystery, and there’s still a lot more to discover. The ending of Young Sherlock season 1 perfectly sets up a second season, leaving some questions that need to be answered and also preparing the ground for Moriarty’s villain turn. At the time of writing, Young Sherlock hasn’t been renewed for a second season yet, but everything is in its favor, so it’s only a matter of waiting for an official announcement. As for Sherlock, the show had a definitive, although disappointing, ending in its fourth season. Talks about a fifth season of Sherlock have been floating around for years, but after different updates throughout the years and no real development, it looks like more episodes of Sherlock won’t be happening. Is It Time For Another Sherlock Renaissance? The success of Young Sherlock could be the push that the BBC and the team behind Sherlock need to revive the show. A comeback doesn’t necessarily have to be a full season, and it could be a special episode that reunites the audience with Holmes and Watson, while giving them one more mystery to solve. However, the most important thing to consider is the audience’s interest. Sherlock was huge when it was released, building a big, passionate fandom that changed fandom culture, but a lot of time has passed since the show’s finale, which wasn’t a good one, to begin with. It might be for the better to just let Sherlock as it is, and give a chance to new adaptations and versions like Young Sherlock. Guy Ritchie's new Young Sherlock series reinterprets the early life of the famous detective, portraying him as a disgraced youth drawn into a perilous murder case. Set in 1870s Oxford and beyond, the story traces his involvement in a global conspiracy that initiates his evolution into the celebrated Bakert Street sleuth.
