Piper Laurie and Joan Chen in Twin Peaks
Although Twin Peaks is one of the densest TV mysteries ever made, this is just another great reason to watch the iconic thriller show more than once. A rare classic horror show that is better than almost any contemporary addition to the genre, Twin Peaks is a supernatural drama set in the titular small town in Washington state.
The story of Twin Peaks follows Kyle MacLachlan’s Dale Cooper as the FBI agent investigating the killing of Laura Palmer, a popular high school girl with a troubled history and a dark second life. As Cooper’s investigations deepened, the intersecting secrets of the townspeople came to light in a show that blended small-town drama, murder mystery, and psychological horror. If that all sounds complex, that’s because it was. Twin Peaks was a TV thriller viewers needed to watch twice if they wanted to truly understand what was going on in the show, as David Lynch and Mark Frost’s series blended dreams, hallucinatory imagery, surrealism, and a bizarre supernatural storyline that was dense with symbolism. Twin Peaks Is One Of The Most Complex TV Mysteries Ever Not only did Twin Peaks have dozens of main characters, but the show was also one of the weirdest hits in mainstream US TV history. Although there were elements of Dallas and Dynasty to its twisty soap opera plotting, Twin Peaks also boasted an offbeat, quirky sense of humor and a dark side that was incomparable to anything on network TV. The darkest twist in Twin Peaks was a bleak, brutal revelation that remains unmatched by even the harshest moments in later hits like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, or The Sopranos, precisely because it took place in a network show. What began life as a murder mystery morphed into something stranger, more ambitious, and far darker over time. Like many of Lynch’s movies, which warped traditional images of picket fence American suburbia beyond recognition, Twin Peaks took advantage of the audience’s familiarity with the show's seemingly recognizable tropes. There was a teenage rebel with a heart of gold, a precocious high school girl who fell for the hero, and a perfect prom queen with a tragic secret. However, all of their stories were more thorny, complicated, and crushingly sad than viewers expected, and none of their stories unfolded the way viewers hoped. Twin Peaks took the familiar bedrock of a small-town murder mystery and twisted it into something strange and unsettling, where the clues never added up, and the mystery’s true meaning was always evasive. Twin Peaks Is A Rewarding Rewatch All of this might make it sound like Twin Peaks is painfully opaque, and the show does have a reputation for being tough to parse. However, compared to other mystery box shows like Lost, Twin Peaks is an incredibly rewarding rewatch and a show whose unhurried pace and strange storytelling decisions don’t detract from its story. On the contrary, the more viewers immerse themselves in the world of Twin Peaks, the more they can glean from the small town and its secrets. Especially when taken in tandem with Frost’s numerous tie-in books and Lynch’s controversial movie spinoff Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, the show is a cohesive, if complex and ambitious, whole. 2017’s strange, slow, and often off-putting revival, Twin Peaks: The Return, was something of a letdown for viewers who misremembered the original series as something more comfortable, predictable, and accessible than it really was. However, the third outing was arguably the best TV revival of all time when viewed as part of the larger story of the series. Twin Peaks season 2 infamously went off the rails after the early revelation of Laura Palmer’s killer, prompting its cancellation after the finale. Decades later, after the landscape of TV had changed immeasurably , the show returned with a bolder, darker, and more uncompromising story to tell. Twin Peaks Redefined The Mystery Genre At every turn, Twin Peaks: The Return avoids the comforts of nostalgia in favor of something stranger and more challenging. Dale Cooper is back, but he’s both a monstrous villain and a hapless goofball instead of his old reliable self. Countless characters are resigned to tragic fates decades after season 2’s finale, and many even seem to be trapped in memories. This nightmarish setup allows Twin Peaks: The Return to criticize the nostalgia that underpins so many lesser TV comebacks, deconstructing the pleasant, anodyne returns that viewers expect. Since the original Twin Peaks shocked and horrified viewers, it makes sense that its comeback is as surreal and confrontational as the original show. Of course, the success of Twin Peaks means, ironically, it is now hard to understand just how shocking the show was when it first aired. Bringing trippy elements of surrealism into an otherwise straightforward TV genre, Twin Peaks influenced everything from Desperate Housewives to The Sopranos to Lost. Despite its ubiquitous influence, though, Twin Peaks remains a truly unique mystery masterpiece. 28 8.3/10 10/10 Twin Peaks 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed Mystery Drama Crime Release Date 1990 - 1991-00-00 Network Showtime, ABC Showrunner Mark Frost Directors Mark Frost Writers David Lynch Cast See All
