Even though some films are given a theatrical run, they are primarily designed to be consumed on home video. This seems to be the case with The Astronaut, the sci-fi horror film that was released in theaters last October, but was only able to gross around $60,000.
The movie will soon be available to stream on Hulu, where it can essentially be discovered by audiences for the first time. The film featured a cast made up of veterans of the Black Mirror, The Matrix, and The Terminator franchises, and combined elements of the classic sci-fi films Alien and The Martian. The Astronaut featured Kate Mara as the titular character, who spends time at the International Space Station and returns to Earth with the suspicion that she has been followed back by an extraterrestrial. The Astronaut also featured Laurence Fishburne and Gabriel Luna in supporting roles, and was directed by Jess Varley. It premiered at the South by Southwest Film Festival last year, but received mixed reviews upon release. The Astronaut is now sitting at a 42% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, but doesn't yet have a critics' consensus. In his review for Collider, Matthew Donato praised the film's ambitions, but described it as a"mess." A part of the review read,"The Astronaut has sky-high ambitions that go up in flames during the home stretch. Everything's chugging along fine, then the tone implodes, and Varley's command over scenes disintegrates. I haven't seen a movie shoot itself in the foot like this in a wee bit, and that's a shame." 'The Astronaut' Features Veterans of Major Sci-Fi Franchises Incidentally, Mara was a part of the cast of the Black Mirror episode"Beyond the Sea," also centered around astronauts. Fishburne, of course, is best known for playing Morpheus in the original Matrix trilogy, but he didn't return as the character in the divisive fourth installment, The Matrix Resurrections; Morpheus was played in that film by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. However, Fishburne got an opportunity to reunite with Matrix star Keanu Reeves in the John Wick franchise. Luna played a Terminator in Tim Miller's franchise-ending Terminator: Dark Fate, which earned decent reviews but flopped terribly at the box office.
