Cuyahoga Heights and Warren John F. Kennedy met Friday in a Division VII, Region 25 semifinal.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — No. 9 Cuyahoga Heights rallied in the second half and then survived in the final minute to defeat No. 5 Warren John F. Kennedy, 21-19, in a Division VII, Region 25 semifinal at Orwell Grand Valley High School on Friday.
JFK’s Fred Bolchalk scored on a 1-yard run with less than a minute remaining to cut the lead to 21-19. The Red Wolves defense denied a JFK two-point conversion run to hold on for the victory. For the third straight playoff game, Cuyahoga Heights defeated the better seeded team. It previously defeated No. 8 Norwalk St. Paul and No. 1 Berlin Center Western Reserve, both on the road.
Cuyahoga Heights will play No. 2 Jeromesville Hillsdale in the regional final at site to be determined on Nov. 22. Devon Dzik’s 22-yard touchdown and the extra point gave the Red Wolves their first lead of the game, 14-13, early in the third quarter. The Red Wolves extended the lead to 21-13 as Zach Shafer scored on a 5-yard run with 4:17 left in the game.JFK’s Marcus Komara returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown to give the Eagles an early lead. Dzik returned the ensuing kickoff to the 16-yard line to set up Gavin Chamberlin’s 12-yard rushing touchdown.
