Dangerously cold windchills persist tonight and Wednesday morning. Take extra precautions if you have to be outside.A COLD WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect for mos

Central Ohio is under an Extreme Cold Warning on Tuesday, as wind chills are excpected to remain below 0 for the next several days.A COLD WEATHER ADVISORY is in effect for most of Ohio until midday Wednesday.

Wind chills to -10F or colder. An EXTREME COLD WARNING is in effect for Central Ohio, including the Columbus metro area, until midday Wednesday. Wind Chills to -20F or colder. If you must go outdoors, dress in warm layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves to prevent frostbite. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make sure outdoor animals have a warm, dry shelter, food, and unfrozen water. The National Weather Service establishes very specific criteria for issuing watches, warnings, and advisories. In the case of cold, winter weather, the criteria are different based on location and local averages. For example, an Extreme Cold Warning is triggered for wind chills of -20F or colder in Central Ohio, but -15F or less for Southern Ohio. A Cold Weather Advisory means we can expect wind chills of -10F or colder in Central Ohio, but -5F or less in Southern Ohio. Ohio is still sandwiched between low pressure to the north and high pressure to the south, creating gusty winds across the region. As a cold front works its way through the state this afternoon, scattered snow showers will be possible with accumulations of less than an inch. Blowing and drifting snow will continue to plague road crews who are still trying their best to keep up with the blustery conditions. Despite some sunshine filtering through the clouds, it’s not doing much to warm the region. Midday temperatures are in the teens across the state with windchill at or below zero. Dusty winds are causing some of the powdery snow too drift over already-cleared roadways. With gusty winds continuing overnight, windchills will drop to double-digits below zero again; COLD WEATHER ADVISORIES and EXTREME COLD WARNINGS remain in effect through, at least, midday Wednesday. High pressure tries to move into the region by Wednesday morning but dissipates quickly. An incoming front may bring a few flurries by Wednesday evening and overnight. Accumulations, if any, will be minimal. Ohio is mostly between systems on Thursday. Unusually-strong high pressure builds into the Upper Midwest on Friday, dragging cold, Canadian air across the Great Lakes and into Ohio. Temperatures remain more than 20 degrees below normal during the day with overnight lows dropping below zero. By the weekend, high-pressure dominates the middle of the country while a strengthening low-pressure center crawls up the Eastern Seaboard. The eastern low will likely become a significant nor’easter by Sunday, creating very difficult conditions in the East Coast metro areas and hubs.A smaller low slips through the Upper Great Lakes on Monday and may have just enough energy to trigger a few flurries or isolated snow showers in Ohio. Accumulations will be minimal and patchy. High pressure returns on Tuesday.Cold Weather and Snow Advisory remains in effect this morning and afternoon with wind chill values of -15 to -10 possible.
