Columbus has named a new interim leader for its fire division as the city begins a nationwide search for a permanent chief. Public Safety Director Kate McSweeney-Pishotti appointed Assistant Chief Dave Baugh as interim fire chief of the Columbus Division of Fire following the resignation ofearlier this year.

In the interim role, Baugh will oversee all division operations and ensure personnel, resources and equipment remain prepared to provide emergency services across the city. “As we continue delivering the highest level of emergency services to the residents of Columbus, it is essential that we have steady and experienced leadership guiding the Division during this transition,” McSweeney-Pishotti said. “Assistant Chief Baugh brings decades of operational experience, strong institutional knowledge, and a deep commitment to the safety of our community and our firefighters.” Baugh, serving with the Columbus Division of Fire since 1996, currently leads the Fire Prevention Bureau. That role oversees public education initiatives, enforcement of fire prevention codes, and management of fire investigation reports. In 2017, he received the Fire Service Award of Merit for managing the rescue of a person pinned 130 feet in the air by construction debris at a downtown high-rise. “I am honored to serve as interim fire chief for the Columbus Division of Fire,” Baugh said. “I am committed to supporting our firefighters, maintaining the Division’s mission of protecting life and property, and ensuring we continue delivering outstanding service to the residents of Columbus.”The City of Columbus has launched a nationwide search for a permanent fire chief.
