The king, whose reign has been tarnished by the Andrew scandal, risks being seen ‘sucking up’ to Donald Trump

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump, right, stand next to Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla as they bid their farewells during Donald Trump’s departure from Windsor Castle, in Windsor, England, Thursday, Sept.

18, 2025. Buckingham Palace has finally made it official, announcing Tuesday that Charles III will pay a visit to the United States at the end of April to meet with Donald Trump, but it’s not going to be an easy trip for the king personally, for the sake of his reputation, or for the state of British and American relations. On the personal front, the 77-year-old king is still undergoing treatment for cancer. In addition, his estranged son, Prince Harry, is not expected to travel from his home in Montecito, in Southern California, to rendezvous with him in Washington, D.C., during the three-day trip, even though Harry is currently in the U.S. capital for a conference, and other outlets have explained how this state visit is politically risky for Charles. British politicians on all sides of the political spectrum have voiced opposition to the trip, the Daily Mail reported. These politicians are concerned that sending the king to appear in friendly photo ops with Trump in the Oval Office, or at a glittering White House state dinner, would be tantamount to an “endorsement” of the president’s divisive foreign policies, including America’s current war with Iran, which is not supported by the British government, the Daily Mail reported.also showed that close to 60% of respondents opposed the trip, citing concerns about the king being used to flatter the “ego” of an “unstable” and “narcissistic” Trump.that the timing of the trip is “a high-risk move for Charles.” Trump was given lavish treatment during his state visit to Britain in September, but “the political return has been non-existent,” Sykes said on. Trump has continued to lash out at the British government and at Prime Minister Keir Starmer for refusing to support his war against Iran and for refusing to allow British bases to be used for air strikes against Iran. The British government nonetheless seems intent on preserving the “so-called special relationship” between Britain and the United States, but Sykes said that sending the king to Washington “risks rewarding Trump’s volatile style at a moment when the war in Iran has made the wider international situation deeply dangerous.” “However carefully choreographed the visit may be, the king, whose reign has been tarnished by the Andrew scandal, will still be seen as sucking up to one of the most divisive politicians in the world, and that raises the question of what he stands to gain from being put into such a politically charged moment,” Sykes said. Both Sykes and the Daily Mail point out that it’s not up to Charles whether he goes to Washington. Royal trips overseas are made at the recommendation of the government, “rather than at the personal whim of the monarch,” Sykes said. In announcing the trip, Buckingham Palace said: “On advice of His Majesty’s Government, and at the invitation of the president of the United States, the king and queen will undertake a state visit to the United States of America.” As expected, the trip will involve Charles joining Trump in “marking the 250th anniversary of American Independence.” This will be a way for the two leaders to celebrate the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the two countries. The Daily Mail suggested that Buckingham Palace had taken its time to formally announce the trip because of the current political environment. U.K. government officials and diplomats have had to weigh potential opposition to the trip against the need to shore up British and U.S. relations. It’s well known that Trump admires the British royal family and its monarchs, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and Charles. There apparently is hope that Charles could use “soft power” diplomacy to smooth over any tensions between the two governments. Last week, Washington’s ambassador to the U.K. said it would be a “very big mistake” for the British government to cancel Charles’ visit to the United States, the Daily Mail reported. In a question-and-answer session following his speech to the British Chambers of Commerce conference in London, Warren Stephens also said: “I think he will go and I think it will be a very meaningful trip for him.”This Sacramento suburb is booming.
