PETERSBURG, Fla. — The Astros are going to wait until they return home before deciding if Yordan Alvarez will need a stint on the injured list with what the team is calling “neck discomfort.”to get his neck examined by doctors after dealing with issues for about a week.

Astros manager Dusty Baker said his slugger is “about the same” but still is hopeful he’ll be able to avoid the injured list. After completing the series with the Rays on Wednesday night, the team has an off day Thursday before opening a six-game homestand against the Phillies and Giants. “A lot of these questions, I can’t answer until we get home and lay eyes on him,” Baker said before Wednesday's game., his average had dipped to .253 after going 7-for-39 in the past two weeks. His strikeout rate also is the highest of his five-year career. Alvarez has struck out in 27.8 percent of his plate appearances this season, compared to just 18.9 percent last year, when he finished third in American League MVP voting. His previous career high was 25.5 percent as a rookie.
