KUALA LUMPUR: Mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying’s Olympic dream has taken a huge blow.
The world No. 7 have made life difficult for themselves after crashing out 16-21,11-21 to Indonesia’s Rinoy Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari in the first round of the All-England at the Arena Birmingham on Wednesday.“We were not in good condition. It’s been a long time since we played in a tournament and we were a bit lost in the match, ” said Liu Ying.
And to make matters worse, their participation in the Indian Open from March 24-29 and the Malaysian Open from March 31-April 5 is in doubt.“We’ve to perform better than the All-England in the upcoming tournaments to improve on our chances of qualifying for the Olympics but the problem is that we may not get to compete, ” added Liu Ying.
Tan Kian Meng-Lai Pei Jing did better than Peng Soon-Liu Ying to reach the second round after defeating Joshua Hurlburt-Yu-Josephine Wu of Canada 21-16,21-16 but that was as far as they went. They eventually went down fighting 19-21,21-18,10-21 to Praveen Jordan-Melati Daeva Oktavianti of Indonesia. It was also a good day for Malaysia in the women’s doubles when Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean and Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen made it to the second round.
