PETALING JAYA: Rio Olympics silver medallists Goh V Shem-Tan Wee Kiong can afford a smile now – they are still in the fight for places in the Tokyo Olympics.
The Badminton World Federation have announced that the Indian Open, to be held from March 24-29, will go ahead as planned despite the rapidly growing Covid-19 threat worldwide.
A nation can send a maximum of two pairs if both are ranked in the top eight, but this looks an unlikely outcome at the moment as V Shem-Wee Kiong trail the top eight cut by 7,000 points. The status of the Indian Open was initially in doubt after Badminton Association of India told ESPN in an interview that they had written to BWF to push for the postponement of the tournament.
“The BWF and BAI confirmed the decision after BAI consulted experts over the past few days regarding advisories issued by health authorities in India,” said BWF in a statement yesterday.
