PETALING JAYA: Malaysia's top mixed pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying suffered their worst outing in four years at the All-England when they were sent packing in the first round.
The world No. 6 and 2017 All-England runners-up went down 16-21,11-21 to Rinov Rivaldy-Pitha Haningtyas Mentari of Indonesia at the Arena Birmingham on Wednesday .The first round exit, as well as their defeat to lower-ranked rivals, certainly does not augur well for them ahead of the Tokyo Olympics.
In the men's doubles, last year's finalists Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik kicked off their campaign with a convincing 21-15,21-17 win over compatriots Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. Aaron-Wooi Yik next take on Taiwan's Lu Ching-yao-Yang Po-han, while Yew Sin-Ee Yi will also face Taiwanese rivals Lee Yang-Wang Chi-lin.Chow Mei Kuan-Lee Meng Yean clinched a hard-fought 15-21,21-15,21-18 victory in 62 minutes over China's Li Wenmei-Zheng, Yu while Vivian Hoo-Yap Cheng Wen barely broke a sweat as they downed Swiss-Dutch combination Nadia Fankhauser-Iris Tabeling 21-13,21-17.
