Christian Brothers Academy won 11 bouts and scored bonus points in nine of those in romp

The match to determine the No. 1 team in the Shore Conference turned into a drubbing when CBA, ranked No. 3 in the state byCBA outscored Southern, 123-37. Southern did not score a single point in four bouts and scored three or fewer points in five others.

The truth of the matter is, the rest of the Shore Conference and yes, even Southern, the highest ranked public school team in New Jersey, would need an elevator to get to the level CBA is wrestling at right now. “Southern is always circled on the schedule as a rivalry, I guess,” said CBA’s senior 144-pounder Bobby Duffy. “We kind of want to end that as a rivalry. “It’s not a rivalry any more,” added Duffy, who used a cement mixer to pin Attila Vigliante. “I think we proved that .”In January of 2023, Southern defeated a then up-and-coming CBA squad, 27-25. A year later, CBA won 30-28. Last year CBA won, 45-28. On Wednesday, Southern lost by its largest margin to a Shore Conference opponent since 2010-2011 when it was defeated by Jackson Memorial, 39-9. And while Southern head coach Dan Roy didn’t come out and say it, he had a good idea what was coming. Roy passed on obvious lineup maneuvers and sent his team out straight-up against a loaded CBA lineup.“Yeah, I could have done a couple of things and we might have won a couple of more matches,” Roy said. “We’re getting ready for the end of the season. The point is to get better.”Roy could have moved Anthony Mason up to 132 and away from returning state champion Paul Kenny. He did not. Kenny pinned Mason in 47 seconds.“Attila wanted to wrestle Duffy,” Roy said. “We wanted to see where Mason was at against Kenny. Some of our young guys held their own.” “We needed this,” Roy said. “A loss like this humbles you. It makes you go back in the room and work harder. I don’t regret anything.” There were three bouts matching wrestlers ranked in the NJ.com Individual Wrestler rankings this week. At 106, CBA freshman Santino Edgar, ranked No. 6 in the state, was an 8-3 winner over Southern freshman Jonas Lusker, who was No. 2.At 190, Southern’s Levi Foote, who is ranked No. 7 at 215, defeated Brock Oizerowitz, who is No. 5 at 175. Oizerowitz moved up a weight and Foote down a class. Foote, who weighed-in at 192.2, broke open a close bout with a reversal and near fall in the third period for a 12-5 victory. Then there was Duffy. Known for his devastating cradle, Duffy showed off another pinning combination.“A little cement mixer,” Duffy said with a smile. “Everybody thinks it’s a little boys move but it works at the highest level of high school wrestling. “We were hip to hip and I could feel his head was down,” Duffy explained. “I had an underhook in, one hand on his chin and then I punched the underhook. It was tight.”Joe Zedalis is in his 48th year covering high school sports. A graduate of Jackson Memorial High School and Ocean County College, Zedalis worked at the Lakewood Daily Times, the Daily Observer in Toms River,...
