Seton Hall’s Holloway doesn’t ‘want to get carried away’ despite biggest win of the season

Tajuan Simpkins dunks the ball to put Seton Hall up, 45-34, with 13 minutes to go in the second half of the 2025 Garden State Hardwood Classic against Rutgers, Saturday, Dec. 13, 2025 in Newark, N.J. Seton Hall won, 81-59.

Behind a career-high tying 27 points from Tajuan “Twin” Simpkins and a brilliant all-around performance from Adam “Budd” Clark , The Hall overcame an 11-point halftime deficit to dominate Xavier, 86-68, at Prudential Center.said in his post-game radio interview after his team improved to 15-6, 5-5 Big East. “Obviously, this was a big game for us, and obviously Saturday’s a big game for us.” After starting the season 14-2, The Hall had dropped four in a row and looked well on their way to making it five after they let Tre Carroll pour in 22 points during a first half in which Xavier led 41-30. It was obvious that Holloway lit into his team at the half to motivate them, but said he couldn’t disclose what was relayed at the half. Holloway shifted his rotation and played Simpkins and Najai Hines to start the second half. He did not play Elijah Fisher down the stretch and also said he prefers having Simpkins come off the bench in a Vinnie “Microwave” Johnson type of role. The Hall erupted with a 23-3 run to open a second half in which they outscored Richard Pitino’s club 56-27.Simpkins and Clark took over in the second half, with some help from Jacob Dar and Hines . “I know what ‘Twin’ gonna give me, so I don’t need to start ‘Twin,’” Holloway said of the Elon transfer who shot 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. “But if I start ‘Twin’ and ‘Twin’ don’t give me something, and I come off the bench with somebody who’s not giving me nothing... I know what certain guys are gonna give me.” Meantime, Clark, the Merrimack transfer, had one of his best all-around games as a Pirate, pushing the tempo and attacking in transition. “I’ve been harping on him for almost three weeks now, ‘Get back to pushing the basketball,’” Holloway said “He has to push the ball like that,” Holloway added. “By him pushing the ball he puts a lot of pressure on the defense, not even the scoring but getting other people involved. I thought we got a lot of easy baskets by him pushing the basketball. He has to do that all the time for us.” The Pirates also grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and shot 21-of-28 from the line. Holloway said it was the first time this season his team got to have shootaround at The Rock, calling that “nutty.” “We needed this win so it was good to get a win,” Holloway said. “And just, you know, now we got a quick turnaround for a Marquette team who’s playing really well.”Adam Zagoria is a Basketball Insider who covers hoops at all levels -- NBA, College and Recruiting.
