In an important update, authorities have extended the voter list revision deadline by a week, giving citizens in 12 states more time to correct and update their details till February 14.
Election Commission : The Election Commission has pushed the deadline for the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in 12 states and Union Territories by one week, extending it to February 14. The move comes on the eve of the winter session of Parliament, where the SIR process is expected to spark heated exchanges between the government and the Opposition.
In a three-page order issued today, the Commission said poll officials will now have an additional week to publish the draft electoral rolls. The enumeration period, which was earlier set to close on December 4, will now continue until December 11.According to the updated schedule, the draft voter list initially planned for release on December 9 will now be made public on December 16. The final list will be issued on February 14.This week, leaders from the Trinamool Congress and several other Opposition parties met Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi, urging the Commission to revise the SIR timeline, citing concerns over preparedness and fairness.Opposition leaders urged the Election Commission to streamline the SIR process, citing concerns over how the massive door-to-door verification drive is being handled. Their appeal follows reports that booth-level officers are under extreme pressure as they work against tight deadlines to complete the workload, NDTV reported. Several incidents of BLOs dying by suicide have been reported from West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. Bengal’s assembly elections are scheduled for early next year, adding to the urgency.The first phase of the three-tier SIR exercise in Bengal is now nearing completion. As of November 29, the Election Commission has identified 18.70 lakh deceased voters who still appear on the rolls.According to IANS, the Commission has also revised upward its estimate of names likely to be removed from the draft list. The new projection stands at around 35 lakh, which includes the 18.70 lakh deceased voters along with duplicate, untraceable and permanently migrated voters.
