The election process now moves to its final stage, with the official counting of votes scheduled to begin on Friday at 10:00 AM. Voters and political observers will be able to track the results through live updates on the official BMC website. A total of 1,700 candidates are in the fray, contesting for 227 seats in India’s richest municipal body. To secure control of the civic body, a party or alliance will need to cross the majority mark of 114 seats in the 227-member house.Preliminary figures released by the State Election Commission place voter turnout across 29 municipal corporations, including Mumbai, between 46% and 50%.The polling day was not without controversy. Opposition leaders Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray raised concerns over the quality of the indelible ink used during voting, alleging that it could be easily removed with solvents and might enable bogus voting.
