Two students are in critical condition and an adult paraprofessional is also hospitalized following Tuesday morning's stabbing attack by a student inside Walton Middle School/WCSO and WEAR WALTON COUNTY, Fla.
-- Two students are in critical condition and an adult paraprofessional is also hospitalized following Tuesday morning's stabbing attack by a student inside Walton Middle School. Walton County Sheriff Michael A. Adkinson, Jr. held a press conference around 1 p.m., saying the entire attack took place in less than 45 seconds. The student suspect -- whose name has not been released by authorities -- is currently being interviewed at the sheriff's office. The students involved are all seventh graders between 12 and 13 years-old. The sheriff did not provide the age of the woman paraprofessional. According to the sheriff, around 7:17 a.m., the student suspect was dropped off at the school entrance. "The school was not opened at the time," Sheriff Adkinson said. "It was not normal school hours. It was early drop-off. There were probably 40 students total, something like that, in the school." The sheriff says the student suspect walked directly into a hallway bathroom and stayed in there for approximately two minutes and 40 seconds. "When he walked out of the bathroom, he's masked and armed with a sharp instrument," Sheriff Adkinson said. "He suddenly attacks the first student he comes in contact with -- stabbing them multiple times." The sheriff says the student suspect then ran down the hallway and attacked a woman paraprofessional. "He continued running down the hallway and at some point made contact with a third victim who is also a student," Sheriff Adkinson said. "That victim was stabbed." The student suspect fled the scene following the third attack, according to the sheriff, but he was taken into custody near the school within approximately seven minutes. "Immediate life saving aid was being rendered and offered to the two most seriously injured individuals," Sheriff Adkinson said. " We had multiple ambulances there as well as DeFuniak Springs and Walton County Fire Rescue." One student victim was flown to a Pensacola hospital, while the other student victim was transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical Center. The paraprofessional was also transported to Fort Walton Beach Medical with non life-threatening injuries.The Walton County Sheriff's Office plans to hold another press conference on Wednesday to release more info. "We're gonna make decisions on what is the appropriate charge," Sheriff Adkinson said. "And that is ultimately the decision of the State Attorney's Office." Walton County Superintendent Russell Hughes said Tuesday that "our intention is to get children back in school as soon as possible. School is a safe place and that's where we want them."
