A head-on collision between two trams has injured at least 27 people, with five suffering serious injuries, in the German city of Düsseldorf. The incident occurred on a busy day as thousands gathered to celebrate Japan Day. Police are investigating the cause, which preliminary investigations suggest could be due to a misaligned switch controlling the tracks. The two trams collided on a major intersection and one had derailed. Nearby tram lines remain disrupted.

At least 27 people have been injured, five seriously, after two trams crashed into each other in the middle of a German city. The two vehicles collided head-on at an intersection between Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Strasse in Düsseldorf at around 11:30am local time.

Emergency services rushed to the scene and treated 27 people. No-one has been assessed as having life-threatening injuries. Police are investigating the incident with the area still closed off this afternoon. It has been suggested that one of the trams could have been on the wrong track before the collision.

This could have been due to a misaligned switch which was controlling the tracks, local media reported. The two trams collided head-on at an intersection between Berliner Allee and Graf-Adolf-Strasse in Düsseldorf at around 11:30am local time Pictures from the scene show the trams' shattered glass windows, and that one had derailed.

There were 55 people onboard the trams at the time of the crash - with the incident unfolding on a busy day in the city centre as thousands gathered to celebrate Japan Day. Witnesses said that one of the trams had been attempting to turn left at the junction, while the other was continuing straight ahead. Multiple tram lines in the city remain disrupted, with residents advised to use other transport methods instead.
