Las Vegas Bets Big on Canadian Tourism to Combat Declining Visitor Numbers
Las VegasTourismCanadian Tourism

Faced with falling tourism numbers, Las Vegas officials are considering a multi-million dollar marketing campaign aimed at attracting Canadian visitors. The proposed investment reflects concerns about declining visitor statistics and a strategic move to revitalize the city's tourism sector.

Las Vegas tourism faces a significant challenge as visitor numbers continue to decline, prompting the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority ( LVCA ) to consider a substantial investment in a new marketing campaign . The LVCA board of directors is slated to deliberate over a proposal that could allocate up to $6 million over a five-year period to specifically target the Canadian market.

This strategic move aims to rejuvenate the city's tourism sector, which has experienced a noticeable downturn in recent years. The LVCA is currently reviewing a one-year contract for the 2027 fiscal year, beginning July 1st of this year, with an estimated cost of $1.12 million. Following this, the contract proposes commitments for the subsequent two fiscal years, 2028 and 2029, with budgets of $1.16 million and $1.12 million, respectively. The potential extension of the contract for two additional years, 2030 and 2031, would incur costs of $1.245 million and $1.285 million, contingent on optional agreements. The LVCA intends to continue its collaboration with Toronto-based Reach Global Marketing, the agency currently managing its Canadian market strategies. Fox News Digital reached out to the LVCA for comment and further details regarding the proposed marketing initiatives and the factors contributing to the decline in tourism. \Recent data released by the LVCA for the year 2025 indicates a decline in overall visitation to Las Vegas. The year-end summary reveals that 38,545,700 people visited Las Vegas, reflecting a 7.5% decrease compared to the 2024 figures. This downturn contrasts sharply with the record-breaking year of 2019, when the city welcomed 42,523,700 visitors, a figure preceding the disruptive impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2025 visitation levels are comparable to those recorded in the early 2000s, specifically in the years 2000, 2002, and 2003, suggesting a regression in tourist volume. In addition to the decline in visitor numbers, key performance indicators such as hotel occupancy, average room rates, and convention attendance also experienced decreases. The total occupancy rate in 2025 was recorded at 80.3%, with average room rates at $196.54. Convention attendance for the same period stood at 5,988,200. These figures paint a picture of a broader downturn affecting multiple facets of the Las Vegas tourism industry, prompting significant concerns among city officials, hotel operators, and travel experts. The collective challenge calls for a multifaceted strategic approach. \A key factor identified by many industry experts as contributing to the downturn in tourism is a decrease in Canadian visitors. The LVCA's focus on the Canadian market underscores the importance of this demographic to the city's tourism ecosystem. Circa Resort & Casino has already taken proactive steps to address the issue, launching an 'at par' promotion to make the exchange rate more favorable for Canadian guests at its properties. This initiative highlights the recognition of the Canadian market's significance and the need for targeted strategies to attract and retain these visitors. The owner of the Circa Resort & Casino, Derreck Stevens, previously noted to Fox News Digital that the decrease in Canadian tourism ranged between 20% and 50% depending on the specific month during the previous year. This substantial drop underscores the urgency of the LVCA's proposed marketing campaign and the potential impact it could have on revitalizing the tourism sector in Las Vegas. The efforts also indicate a proactive stance to recover the economic losses caused by decreased international and domestic tourism, and attempt to regain the momentum that the city had prior to the downturn
