DNA data storage is rapidly advancing from the realm of research projects to a potentially viable alternative to traditional data storage methods. Asimov Press recently debuted the first commercially available book encoded in DNA, marking a significant milestone in this emerging field. This anthology of biotechnology essays and science fiction stories is available for $60, including both a physical copy and a metal capsule containing the DNA version.
To achieve this feat, Asimov Press collaborated with Boston-based company Catalog, which leveraged a method called combinatorial assembly to encode the book's 240 pages (481,280 bytes of data) into approximately 500,000 unique DNA molecules. This process involves creating an alphabet of DNA pieces that can be assembled to represent bits, similar to the arrangement of movable letters in Gutenberg's printing press. \Catalog's approach is more efficient than traditional methods, which synthesize DNA strands letter by letter. This efficiency, coupled with the ability to create numerous replicas from the original encoded DNA, significantly reduces the cost of storage. After encoding, the DNA molecules are dried into a powder and packaged into stainless steel capsules with an inert atmosphere, ensuring long-term preservation for thousands of years. Data stored in DNA can be retrieved using a sequencing machine, which determines the order of the DNA building blocks (As, Cs, Gs, and Ts). \This DNA book project is a tangible example of how biotechnology is becoming more accessible to the public. It highlights the potential of DNA as a storage medium, offering advantages such as longevity, compactness, and energy efficiency. While DNA isn't ideal for frequently accessed data, its ability to preserve large amounts of archival information for extended periods makes it a compelling solution for long-term data storage.
