In Opp, the pipeline for skilled workers is being refilled thanks to the efforts of Lurleen B. Wallace Community College.

OPP , Ala. - The pipeline for skilled workers has been running dry, but in Opp , that pipeline is being refilled one student at a time. Clark Gay sees his classroom as more than just a place to learn. For the Lurleen B.

Wallace Community College freshman studying industrial electronics, it’s where his future starts. “My dream is becoming an HVAC technician, and then later in life, starting my own business with HVAC,” Gay said. Lurleen B. Wallace’s newly renovated Industrial Electronics Building is getting the pipeline for skilled workers flowing again. For students like Gay, it means training with state-of-the-art equipment for the workforce that’s waiting on him. “Right now, there’s huge demand for electronics techs. When you graduate this program, if you don’t get a job, it’s because you don’t want a job,” said Tony Newton, LBW industrial electronics instructor. Newton said the goal is for students to be prepared to step into that demand and do it close to home. “It’s not like they’re having to go to Atlanta or Birmingham or somewhere like that to get a job. There’s plenty of jobs locally. Over 90 percent of students who graduate here go straight into a job,” Newton said.“I’ll be through next spring, and then I get to go into the workforce,” Gay said.Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
